The Spruce mini-lake cabin located in Texas at JH Ranch-Haggard Lake is close to the Lake Mineral Wells State Park, and Dinosaur Valley State Park. The little off-grid cabin does not have electricity and has 12v solar power for lights.
The log cabin is nestled in some remarkable rocks overlooking a private lake. The lake has excellent fishing, boating, and swimming. The owner has kayaks and a canoe that is available to guests. The log cabin has a generator available to power air conditioning on hot days.
This log cabin features lots of nature, it is not a fancy vacation rental, and not for those that don’t want to rough it a bit. The log cabin has no refrigerator, so it brings an ice chest.
There is an outdoor kitchen with a stovetop, smoker, and campfire ring for cooking, and a cool outdoor shower. Enjoy the front covered porch with your morning cup of coffee while you enjoy the view.

At the JH Ranch, you’ll get a big dose of Texas. Working cattle ranch with 200 acres of the rugged country to explore. Quite often they will ride by the log cabin on the horses and kids can climb on for a photo or short ride.
Take a dip in the 6-acre private lake that also offers great fishing and kayaking. If you want some adventure, you can sign up for the Jeep tour of the ranch. If you are serious about fishing, you can get the 2-man bass boat with trolling motor. The following are some of the things to do in the area.
Dinosaur Valley State Park. Long ago, dinosaurs left footprints in the mud at the edge of an ancient ocean. Today, you can walk in their tracks in the bed of the Paluxy River.
This long trip to the past is just a short drive from Fort Worth. At the park, you can find dinosaur tracks, camp, picnic, hike, mountain bike, swim, fish, paddle in the river, watch for wildlife, look for a geocache, ride your horse, or visit our interpretive center.
Explore 20 miles of trails. It’s easy to find dinosaur tracks in the park you just need to head to the river. Dinosaur tracks are in the riverbed and are not always visible. Download maps on your GPS-enabled smartphone from the Mapping Dinosaur Tracks page.
Ride your horse. Bring your horse to explore the 100-acre South Primitive Area. The river runs through this wooded, semi-rocky part of the park. No potable water is available, horses can drink from the river (bring your bucket).
Take a Guided tour. Eagle Eye Ranch Carriage Company offers a variety of equestrian services from guided horseback riding to horse-drawn wagon rides, and wrangler-assisted trail rides for children 3 to 14 years old. You can saddle up and enjoy some spectacular views along the park’s scenic trails.
